How to Choose Bariatric Equipment
- Weight capacity: choose equipment rated comfortably above the user's weight, and include anything carried on it, such as bags or an oxygen tank.
- Seat width: measure across the widest part of the hips while seated and add about 2 inches. A seat that is too narrow causes pressure and makes transfers harder.
- Commode seat height: sit with feet flat on the floor and measure from the floor to the back of the knee. Set the commode to that height or up to an inch above.
- Steel or carbon fiber rollator: a steel rollator gives the highest capacity; a carbon fiber rollator is lighter to lift into a car.
