How to Choose a Walker or Rollator

  • Walker or rollator: a standard walker has no wheels or two front wheels and is lifted or slid forward, giving the most support; a rollator has three or four wheels, hand brakes and often a seat, so it suits people who can walk steadily but need balance support and rest breaks.
  • 3 wheel or 4 wheel: a 3 wheel rollator is lighter and turns more easily in tight spaces but has no seat; a 4 wheel rollator is more stable and includes a seat for resting.
  • Handle height: stand up straight with your arms relaxed at your sides. The handles should line up with the crease of your wrist, so your elbows bend slightly when you hold them.
  • Upright walker: if you tend to hunch over a standard rollator, an upright walker lets you rest your forearms on padded armrests and stand taller while walking.
  • Weight capacity and height: choose a model rated above the user's weight. Bariatric rollators in this collection support up to 500 lb, and our tall rollator fits users up to 6' 5".

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a walker and a rollator?

A walker has no wheels or two front wheels and gives the most support, but you lift or slide it forward as you walk. A rollator has three or four wheels, hand brakes and usually a seat, so it rolls with you and lets you rest. Rollators are best for people who have good balance but need support and rest breaks.

Should I choose a 3 wheel or 4 wheel rollator?

A 3 wheel rollator is lighter and turns more easily in small spaces, but it has no seat. Our compact 3 wheel rollator weighs 11 lb and supports up to 250 lb. A 4 wheel rollator is more stable and has a seat so you can sit down when you get tired.

How do I set the right handle height?

Stand up straight in your usual shoes with your arms hanging loosely at your sides. Set the handles level with the crease of your wrist. When you hold the handles, your elbows should bend slightly.

What is an upright walker?

An upright walker has tall handles with padded forearm rests, so you stand up straight and look forward instead of leaning over the walker. Our upright walker supports up to 300 lb, weighs 20 lb and includes a seat, backrest and shoulder bag.

What is a hemi walker used for?

A hemi walker is used with one hand by people who need more support than a cane but can only use one arm, such as after a stroke or with weakness on one side. Its wide four leg base is steadier than a quad cane.

Do you have rollators for tall or heavier users?

Yes. Our tall rollator has handles from 35" to 40" and fits users 5' 11" to 6' 5". For higher weight capacity, our bariatric carbon fiber rollator supports 450 lb and our bariatric steel rollator supports 500 lb.

Can someone push me while I sit on a rollator?

No. A rollator seat is for resting only, with the brakes locked. It is not made to be pushed with a person sitting on it. If you need to be pushed, choose a transport wheelchair instead.

What does a walker platform attachment do?

A walker platform attachment lets you rest your forearm on the walker instead of gripping the handle. It fits most standard two button walkers and can help people with hand, wrist or grip problems.
