Manual and Transport Wheelchair Comparison

A manual wheelchair can be pushed by the user with the large rear wheels or by a caregiver. A transport wheelchair has small rear wheels and is pushed by a caregiver only.

How to Choose a Wheelchair

  • Manual, transport or power: a manual wheelchair lets the user push themselves; a transport chair is lighter but must be pushed by a caregiver; a power wheelchair is driven with a joystick for people who can't self propel for long.
  • Seat width: measure across the widest part of the hips while seated and add about 2 inches. A seat that is too wide makes pushing harder, and one that is too narrow causes pressure points.
  • Doorways: measure your narrowest door. Our folding transport wheelchair is 20.5" wide overall and fits a standard 24" doorway.
  • Weight capacity: choose a chair rated above the user's weight. Bariatric manual and heavy duty power wheelchairs in this collection support up to 600 lb.
  • Lifting and travel: check the chair weight if you will lift it into a car. Folding power wheelchairs weigh about 42 to 44 lb, while full size power wheelchairs need a ramp or lift.

Should I choose a power wheelchair or a mobility scooter?

Many folding power wheelchairs use lithium batteries made for air travel, but airline rules differ. Contact your airline before you fly to confirm their battery and wheelchair requirements.
