It's a brace for the ring and little fingers and the bones behind them. The fourth and fifth metacarpals. The name comes from the boxer's fracture, the break you get from punching something hard, but the same bones break in falls and door slams. Two bendable aluminum stays hold the fingers and hand still; the thumb and the other two fingers stay free.
The Extended splint immobilises one finger full-length. The Boxer Splint immobilises two fingers plus the outer side of the hand, which is what a metacarpal fracture needs. If the break is in the finger bone itself, Extended; if it's in the hand behind the finger, Boxer.
It comes in two lengths, 7.75" and 9", measured from the tip of the little finger to the wrist crease. Measure your own hand along that line. If you land between the two, take the longer one. The stays can be trimmed by your clinician but can't be lengthened.
Yes, it's reversible. Flip it and the straps wrap the other way. One size covers both.
Less than people expect. One customer wrote that they were expecting it to be bulky and found it lightweight. The neoprene is perforated so the hand stays cool, and the two stays sit top and bottom rather than around the sides.
Yes. Both stays lift out, can be bent by hand to the angle your doctor wants, and slide back in. Take them out to wash the fabric.
Three hook-and-loop straps hold it. Another customer mentioned that once the straps were tightened it stayed put. That matches what we hear. If it slides, the fit is too loose, not the design.
Remove both aluminum stays, hand wash the neoprene in cold water with mild soap, rinse, and air dry. Put the stays back only when it's fully dry.
No. A boxer's fracture needs an X-ray to check whether the bone has rotated. If it has, splinting it straight can set it wrong. This splint is for after that assessment, when your doctor has said a removable brace is appropriate.
